OnePlus Open camera: the best camera system on a foldable?

Last year OnePlus launched its first foldable phone, the OnePlus Open, and even though it came in at a time when competition was at its most fierce, it manage to blow everyone away with its amazing camera performance!

We were genuinely (and very pleasantly) surprised to see how good each OnePlus Open camera performed. And we are talking about each and every one of the three cameras at the back, and the two selfie cameras embedded in each display.

If you have been following OnePlus and its phones during the past few years you probably already expect to see the name Hasselblad engraved somewhere on this phone, and, sure enough, there is one. This time the popular camera and lens manufacturer has showed its contribution by working on the portrait mode of the OnePlus Open.

Alright, let's get into the details and see what all the fuss is about with the OnePlus Open cameras!

OnePlus Open Camera characteristics

The main (wide-angle) 48MP camera on the OnePlus Open is a first in the market of foldable phones, as it comes with Sony's new LYTIA “Pixel Stacked” image sensor. Of course, for most of us these are just words and abbreviations. To put it in simple terms, this is a sensor which is capable of capturing larger amounts of light without having the large sensor size regular flagship phones come with.According to OnePlus, this new sensor delivers image quality comparable to that of the 1-inch Sony IMX989, which  comes with the Galaxy S23 Ultra. Judging by the photo samples took during our review, it seems OnePlus was not lying! Take a look at some shots taken by the main camera:

The 64MP telephoto camera comes with a customized sensor to make it fit inside the slim body of the OnePlus Open. This customization also allows for 23% more light than the regular sensor would have otherwise been capable of. It comes with a 3X optical zoom, and a sensor crop that enables a 6X lossless sensor crop. There is also a 120x Ultra Res Zoom, but we don't think that one will be any good, as most of that depends on software and AI smarts, which OnePlus is not exactly known for.

Take a look at how good the 3X and 6X zoom levels are:

OnePlus also emphasized on the Portaite Mode, which is where that Hasselblad partnership came into play with the OnePlus Open. The company says that it is especially powerful in low-light conditions, allegedly matching a Hasselblad camera with XCD 30, 65 and 90V lenses. Here are a couple of Portrait Mode photos we took at the office:

If you want to look at even more examples just go to our OnePlus Open review where you will find sample shots from the ultra-wide and selfie cameras, as well as a video where we compare OnePlus' first foldable with Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 5.

How many cameras does the new OnePlus Open have?

The OnePlus Openfoldable phone comes with a total of five cameras: three at the back and two selfie cameras embedded in the cover and inner displays. The three cameras at the back of the OnePlus Open are the main (wide), an ultra-wide, and a 3X telephoto camera.
